Party in Queens 🌇

A few weeks ago, we stepped off the farm for a 2-day quick trip to Astoria, Queens to surprise Steven’s sister Michelle (Aunt Meesh!) for her 40th bday!

We packed in all the NY style pizza, Trinidadian food, fresh mozzarella, thousands of steps, and family feasting time possible into two full days.

The first afternoon, the girls got to walk to the oldest cousin’s school to pick her up and surprise her that we were in town! The squeals were deafening in the best possible way.

That night, we enjoyed the perfect city rooftop sunset! 🌆

Aunt Meesh was super excited to have a private chef for her birthday dinner the next night 😏, so Steven started shopping at all the best local butchers and bakeries and shops and basically prepped the entire day for dinner that night with friends.

The cousins were thankful for all the surprise play time, and it was a nice change for us to walk everywhere, since most everything in their urban life is within a 30-minute walk!

We even squeezed in a visit to the Museum of Natural History which is one of my favorite places from growing up. I was giddy getting to see the whale room and stuffed wildlife dioramas again, because they had only lived in my memory for so many years. I vividly remember walking around the balcony in the whale room on an elementary school field trip, looking down out the worksheet of questions we had to turn in to our teacher to show we had paid attention. Ha!

While my older daughter, Luci, has been to the museum before with Steven on a daddy/daughter trip, this was my younger daughter Norah’s first time to see dinosaur bones, which was super exciting. As we walked slowly through the gallery gaping at the Titanosaur skeleton which spans two rooms, all I could think was, “I can’t believe this actually existed.” It really is wondrous and such an incredible learning experience to see it with your own eyes.

After the museum, we took a quick visit to the Flatiron District (one of my faves areas of NYC) for lunch at Shake Shack and a few generous, melty scoops of my favorite gelato at Eataly. 😋

I do miss some parts about city life, like the convenience, cultural diversity, and so many food options! But I was also happy to return to the farm to embrace all things spring.

Thanks for the city fix, NYC.

2 days in NYC + family = 🫶🏽
